Once upon a time, before the Internet and housing market booms and busts, Doug Meier's picture and his Republic of Gilroy column were a regular Friday feature on the front page of the local newspaper, the Gilroy Dispatch. But then all of Doug Meier's Republic of Gilroy columns were removed from the Dispatch's online archives, even though the columns won two California Newspaper Publisher's Association awards for writing.

Why? Because I had offended the sensibilities of too many entrenched Gilroy insiders too many times by writing the truth about them, and about Gilroy. Years later, these lost columns have been recovered, in the cloud, where Mainstreet Media publishing and its flagship, the Gilroy Dipsack, can't remove them.

Excommunicated by the Mainstreet Media publishing empire for offending the venal cabal of tawdry fools running the town of Gilroy, the Gilroy school district, and the entire South Valley, the Republic of Gilroy took to the Internet, to pursue social and political reform (in vain, of course), and provide ribald social commentary (somewhat successful).
